The Real Reason You Can't Stick to a Diet

Let's clear something up straight away...

You don't have a lack of willpower.

You haven't "failed."

And you're definitely not the only woman who's started a new diet on Monday, only to be eyeing up the biscuit tin by Wednesday.

The problem isn't you.

The problem is the diets you've been trying.

Restriction makes you want it more

Have you ever noticed that the minute you tell yourself...

"I'm not eating chocolate anymore."

...it's suddenly all you can think about?

It's like someone saying, "Whatever you do, don't think about a pink elephant."

Too late.

Your brain is now thinking about a pink elephant.

Food works exactly the same way.

The more you tell yourself you can't have something, the more your brain puts it on a pedestal.

Suddenly, chocolate isn't just chocolate.

It's forbidden.

And forbidden things become far more tempting.

The all-or-nothing cycle

It usually goes something like this...

Monday: "I'm being really good this week."

Tuesday: "I'm smashing this."

Wednesday: "Someone brought cakes into work..."

Thursday: "I've ruined it now."

Friday: "I'll start again on Monday."

Repeat.

Sound familiar?

This isn't because you're weak.

It's because you've been following rules that were never designed to fit around real life.

Life doesn't stop because you're trying to lose weight

Birthdays happen.

Meals out happen.

Holidays happen.

Friday night takeaways happen.

Stress happens.

If your plan only works when life is completely perfect, it's not much of a plan.

Weight loss shouldn't require you to avoid social occasions or spend your life saying no to the foods you enjoy.

Because eventually...

You'll get tired.

And who could blame you?

Here's the question I ask all my clients...

Can you honestly imagine eating like this a year from now?

If the answer is no...

Why are you expecting yourself to stick to it now?

If you're cutting out bread...

Giving up carbs...

Refusing birthday cake...

Living on salads you don't even enjoy...

Or counting down the days until your "cheat meal"...

It's probably not the right approach.

Because weight loss isn't just about losing weight.

It's about keeping it off.

You don't need another diet

You need habits that actually fit your life.

The women I work with still eat out.

They still have holidays.

They still enjoy pizza.

They still eat chocolate.

They don't need "cheat days" because nothing is off limits in the first place.

Ironically, when you stop telling yourself you can't have something...

It often loses its power over you.

That family-size bar of chocolate isn't suddenly so exciting when you know you could have a couple of squares tomorrow if you wanted to.

Freedom creates balance.

Restriction creates obsession.

Stop asking...

"What's the fastest way to lose weight?"

And start asking...

"Could I happily do this a year from now?"

Because if the answer is yes...

You've probably found something sustainable.

And that's where real, lasting weight loss happens.
